United States Swim School Association Member Schools Teaching Kids To Save Own Lives
Apr 28th, 2010

The United Sates Swim School Association member schools are reporting amazing numbers and stories on children who are being taught in their facilities who have been in aquatic life-threatening situations and have successfully saved themselves.

Stories pouring in from all across North America are ranging from infants/toddlers falling in to spas and back yard pools where the children were near an edge and had been trained to reach up and hold on until caretakers could pull them out to safety, to older children forgetting to put a life vest back on after a break from swimming and jumping back in a pool – needing to use their life-saving skills to stay safe until an adult arrived to help.  Some students have even been reported, as early as the age of seven, saving another child’s life before an adult could get to the child in jeopardy by using the skills learned at their United States Swim School Association member school.

Stories also include young children who were able to remain calm and instantaneously get on to their back in order to float and breathe when facing a potentially dangerous water-related incident either in a cold creek or a family bath tub.  Remaining calm in situations such as these is critical and another important part of the curriculum being taught by member schools.

The United State Swim School Association hopes to convey to the participating families of their member schools, as well as the general public, that this year it is their goal to achieve a “Target of Zero” drownings in the summer of 2010.  Member schools have either already hosted, or will be hosting water safety days as the temperatures heat up to help educate their local communities about the risks of water-related injuries and deaths, and to provide information about how to be prepared and/or avoid these situations.  Water safety days often include carnival-like atmospheres in addition to the educational components.  Client families as well as non-client families are encouraged to participate in these extremely fun and informational events.  To find a swim school in your area visit www.usswimschools.org.

The U.S. Swim School Association has over 400 members and has learn-to-swim programs worldwide.  The member list is very impressive, consisting of mentionable U.S. business owners, former Olympic and Division I athletes, as well as a myriad of world-renown authors, and speakers. Member schools teach over 500,000 children to swim every year.

The U.S. Swim School Association will be holding their 2010 National Conference in Las Vegas, Nevada October 13-15.  To find out more about water safety and swim lessons visit www.usswimschools.org.
